How to Prepare for Your Breathwork or Somatic Session

Breathwork is a transformative practice that can support stress reduction, emotional release, and greater self-awareness. Preparing mindfully for your session not only enhances the experience but also helps you feel grounded and safe throughout the process. Whether you are attending a private session, a group workshop, or joining virtually, the following steps will help you get the most out of your breathwork practice.

Computer Setup

Since we will be meeting via Zoom, make sure your technology is set up in advance. Find a stable internet connection, test your audio and video, and position your device so your facilitator can see you while you’re lying dow. Headphones can help you stay immersed in the experience, especially if music or guided cues are included. It’s also a good idea to log in a few minutes early, so you can settle into your space without feeling rushed.

Create a Supportive Environment

Choose a space where you will feel comfortable and free from distraction. If you are practicing at home, consider dimming the lights, silencing your phone, and setting up a yoga mat or couch. Many people find that soft music, candles, or calming scents help to create a nurturing atmosphere.

Dress Comfortably

Wear clothing that allows you to breathe fully and move without restriction. Avoid anything tight around your waist or chest, as unrestricted breathing is key to the practice.

Be Mindful of Food and Drink

To support your body during breathwork, avoid heavy meals, alcohol, or stimulants such as caffeine beforehand. A light snack—such as fruit or a smoothie—can help sustain your energy without hindering your ability to relax into the session.

Gather Essentials

Keep water and lip moisturizer nearby for after your practice to support hydration and integration. You may also wish to have tissues or a journal at hand. Emotional release is common during breathwork, and journaling immediately afterward can help capture insights while they are fresh.

Adopt an Open, Receptive Mindset

Every breathwork experience is unique. Some sessions may feel deeply restorative, while others may bring up strong emotions or energy shifts. Approach your practice with curiosity and trust that your body and breath will guide you toward what you most need in the moment.

Final Note: Preparing intentionally for your breathwork session allows you to step in with greater ease, safety, and openness. By caring for both your body and mind beforehand, you create the best conditions for a meaningful and transformative experience.
